I've been teaching flute for about 30 years now and am always on the look out for something better. I haven't used this book with one of my students yet since I just got it, but I have some reservations. It seems that some pretty advanced rhythms are introduced right away at the beginning of the book, but then not used again. Eighth notes are used in cut time, but sixteenth notes have yet to be introduced.Slurring is introduced right away. I find that students need to have a well-developed tongue before they slur, and if their sense if rhythm isn't already developed, (and it won't be by the time it's introduced in this book) slurring tends to skew the amount of time they give to the notes.I'm also not really sold on the order that the notes are introduced after the standard B, A and G. And, unless the student progresses very quickly, I feel that the level of playing by the end of this book is actually pretty advanced.I think that this book would be great for a beginner who is at least in their teens, or for an adult. Or, maybe for a student who already has previous musical experience, such as piano. I think that I will definitely use it as a supplement/sight reading source to other books that I use, but not as a primary lesson book.

One great quality of a teacher is the ability to maintain student interest and entertain while simultaneously educating. Trevor Wye's wit and humor makes this one of the best instructional books. The exercises are level appropriate however I would not recommend this as a beginner's first book. It's perfect if you have been playing for a while and you would just like some reinforcement exercises. The piano accompaniment on the CD enhances the flute learning experience.

Great beginner flute book. I am 25 years old, don't know how to read music, and have never touched a flute in my life. I feel like this book is REALLY easy to use and essentially holds your hand. I really like how it slowly introduces different notes and incorporates them into easy to play songs.I only take lessons once a week, but this book makes it easy to start on the next lesson before class begins.

This is an excellent book to use for beginning flute students. It has application for a vast level of student ability. I use this to teach both my beginners and also students who have been playing a couple of years. Wye teaches very beginning concepts such as how to hold the flute, make and sound, music notation and reading beginning rhythms. What's nice about this book is it covers basic techniques like finger exercises and scalework in an interesting way so that it can be used by more advanced students. The exercises are short and easy to complete between lessons insuring the student's do not get bored drilling the same lines for weeks. As a teacher, I highly recommend this book to other flute teachers and music educators.

I am a flautist and teacher and this is the best beginner flute book I've found. It's got a lot of counting up front, which is tricky for some students, but spends enough time in the low range that students can really develop a good tone before they move on to a broader range. For students that have some experience with rhythm (even in a school music class) it's really great.

I bought this book to practice the flute on my own. I started about a month ago, and I see a teacher regularly, but I also like to be able to explore this instrument by myself, and this book is the perfect tool for it! It first introduces three notes, and right from the start there are short and amusing tunes to practice playing these. As new notes and their fingering are introduced, the songs gradually incorporate those, and slowly the author brings the beginner to different keys (other than C major).This book does not in any way replace a live teacher, but it provides an interesting companion to my practices. There are original tunes by the author, and simplified adaptations of all genres, mostly from the Renaissance period and a few Xmas/children traditional ones. There are also many songs for two players (two students, or teacher/student). My only regret is not having a companion CD to listen to. For a beginner it would a have been a great help to be able to hear those songs before actually attempting to play them. You can always try to get free MIDI files from various websites, as many songs are from famous composers.This first book focuses on a firm tone in the lower register (lower D to C sharp in the first half), and ventured slightly in the higher register up to G, in the last few songs. I was also puzzled that the F minor key was introduced at this point, without any explanation (while E major's first appearance with Jingle Bells, also introduced early, seemed easier for some reason).I highly recommend buying a fingering chart as a companion (Flute Fingering Chart: For Flute and Piccolo (Amsco Fingering Charts)), instead of flipping through this book for it.

I have played other instruments, but never the flute. This was the book I started with for self-teaching. It did get me off the ground, and I'm now at the point I think I need a teacher. The instructions are good, clear and backed up with enough information to give you a feel for how the care and cleaning of the instrument impacts the music.

Just started using this. I used to play flute, years ago, and wanted to refresh my mind. This works perfectly.

This is a beautiful edition. I love the details, the pictures, and all the things you'll learn about the characters from the HP movies. It's interesting to read notes about each of the characters, and learn a little bit more about them. We love this book! We've spent hours looking/reading through these pages. These books are must have for Harry Potter fans. We have a few of these books, are planning on getting the ones we don't have.

 I did not get the Collector's Edition of Harry Potter Page to Screen so I'm glad that those bundled books are now sold separately, and I also saved some money in the process.The book's a 208-page hardcover with a cover that's designed with the same style as the other Harry Potter film companion books, such as Harry Potter: Page to Screen,Harry Potter: The Creature Vault and Harry Potter: Magical Places. There are nice graphic elements and embossed gold text. Very classy.From what I can see, this seems like the updated book to the character book from the collector's edition. I saw some pages of the book from the collector's edition and the layout looks different but content is the same. Also, there isn't much duplicated content from Harry Potter: Page to Screen.This book focuses on the characters and their costumes, and each is given good coverage in terms of the space devoted, photographs, artworks and writeup. This book covers the human characters so you won't see any creatures of Dobby. There are also students from other schools, the teaching staff and of course Lord Voldemort and his evil gang of Death Eaters. There are also sections talking about the wands, and how they apply makeup, such as to make Harry disfigured when hit by the Stinging Jinx.There are lots of information and I enjoyed reading about how they come up with the design and look for the characters.It's an insightful book that all Harry Potter fans must have. This book is so cool! You get an inside look at how the movie sets work. Fabulous costume details. This book is beautifully designed, stunning visuals and illustrations, so great to read while sipping tea and playing HP ambient music in the background. I learned some surprising things about how things were done - the method behind the magic! Love all the wands, robes, representation. Makes a beautiful gift.

 "Harry Potter: The Character Vault" is a fascinating book that details the characters from the films.Everyone is included - Harry, Ron, Hermoine, Snape, Dumbledore, Voldemort, etc. The main characters get 4-5 pages each, while minor characters usually get a single 2-page spread.The book profiles each character, and the text from Jody Revenson (author of many previous Potter books, including Magical Places) is insightful and well written. For some characters, there are a few words about the actor as well as his/her casting and process. But most of the text is dedicated to discussing the look of the characters; that is, how they are translated visually from the page to the screen. This means discussion about costumes, makeup, hairstyling, and props.You'll find a lot of great images in the book, including some fantastic concept art (usually printed full-page) and unit photography. Again, most of the images are related to costumes and props -- school and Quidditch uniforms; Yule Ball gowns; wand designs; the sorting hat; Death Eater masks; and more. In reading through the book, you really gain an appreciation for the intricate work done to create each character's wardrobe.If you own the Harry Potter Page to Screen Collector's Edition, then you'll notice some similarity between this book and the 'Wizard Wear & Muggle Attire' book from that set. But even if you own that set, there's new content in the Character Vault that would make it a worthy purchase.Included within the book are two pull-out posters: one featuring the Order of the Phoenix, and the other featuring the Death Eaters.This is an excellent resource for fans of the Harry Potter film franchise. It will especially be of interest to those who enjoy the art of costume design.

Love this book! The descriptions of each Harry Potter character is interesting and unique. The author has included wonderful pictures and drawing throughout the book. It really gives one an insight into the characters in the Harry Potter series. So glad I decided to add it to my collection.

This is an awesome book. The pictures are fantastic and the descriptions about use character pretty interesting. They tell a little bit about the actor to and how they came to want the part. This is a pretty fascinating book. Absolutely love it. This goes well with my collection of Harry Potter books.

This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves Harry Potter. My daughter has been very into everything Harry Potter and is reading the books and watching each movie after she reads it, so I bought her this book to explain more about each character. It is better than expected! Large, very solid with nice thick glossy pages, and wonderful photos and illustrations of all of the characters in the Harry Potter series. It explains lots of details about each person, and also about how they were adapted for filming (explaining, for example, how they got Hagrid to look so huge). Both of us have really enjoyed reading this book and looking at the pictures. It is all inclusive and couldn't be any better. Very happy with this purchase! The only thing I will warn you about is if you have not finished reading all of the Harry Potter books yet, this will contain some spoilers. So I'd wait and get this when you've finished all the books. One of my very favorite purchases ever on Amazon, we love it!
