Jef (the Adept) started out in life working on a trawler up to his neck in fish guts. But one day he bought occult books in a little book store specialising in magic. The books were based upon Western Hermetic Magic and they took him all the way to the first great Transformation:



      I was blissfully unaware of real transformation, until I was confronted by the
      first in July 1975.  It came when I least expected it, in a place I would least
      expect to meet the initiator; 11 AM in a crowded public marketplace.
      My sponsor knew it was about to happen, but was bound to keep me unaware.  
      His one concession to me out of friendship, was to ask that I wear a red cord
      tied around my solar plexus under my shirt that day.
      I did as he requested.
      The experience was so trying that I lay sick for three days, part of me in this  
      world and part of me in another place. During those three days, I dreamed the   
      same dream over and over. To this day, I'm not at all sure if it was a dream.
      When I came back to myself, my power had increased a thousandfold or more
      and I knew all I needed to know of the other two transformations, to set about
      working toward achieving each in its turn.



On and on Jef went pushing through light and dark- even on to the the second and yes astonishingly, even to the third great Transformation where:



     Something I have never bothered to mention is that the non-spatial continuum  
     may be manipulated in any way the fully transformed magician wills. The reason  
     I do not choose to do so is something of a paradox.
     The ability to manipulate time in order to serve the magician to his/her benefit  
     comes with the third Transformation. With the third transformation all reason for
     altering the continuum vanishes.
     My sponsor tried to teach me this many years ago: unfortunately, I was incapable  
     at that point of understanding, or appreciating the simple magic of concentric rings...



Jef went all the way, even to where visions of the forth great transformation and it's relationships began appearing in meditations:



     Wraith-like shadows, singing the coloured symbols I have yet to fully master,  
     float above, below, beside and through me, as though I am in a glorious waking
     dream.
     I now understand that the third Great Transformation is not a sudden change, but a  
     slower process. Nor is it magic, being something else entirely. The transformation  
     enables the magician to not only create and de-create across the four worlds of this
     universe, but also allows one to leave the alpha universes behind and begin anew
     in another existence entirely... if the initiate so desires.

GEOF H. GIVENS, PHD, and JENNIFER A. HOETING, PHD, are both Associate Professors in the Department of Statistics, Colorado State University. Dr. Givens is a past recipient of the Outstanding Statistical Application Award from the American Statistical Association and a CAREER grant awarded by the National Science Foundation. His interests include wildlife population dynamics modeling, Bayesian methods, computerized face recognition, and bioinformatics. Dr. Hoeting is an award-winning teacher who helps lead large research efforts funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the National Science Foundation, and she serves as Associate Editor for the Journal of the American Statistical Association. Her research interests include Bayesian methods, model selection, and spatial statistics.

Fascism and anti-fascism again faced each other on the battlefield. Amid the heat of the Nazi invasions in Europe, anti-fascist resistance groups formed by ordinary citizens emerged in virtually all European countries. Although the Franco dictatorship was not directly involved in the world war, in Spain an anti-Franco resistance movement was organized in 1939 and lasted until 1952. Although the Spanish resistance constituted the first and last anti-fascist resistance movement in Europe, the Spanish case has been consistently overlooked by international studies. This book inserts the Spanish anti-Franco resistance into the European context, proposing a new narrative of anti-fascist resistances in Europe.

This Volume represents a synthesis of five distinct products of social science - one research technique and four systems of theory. It grows out of, depends upon, and reflects all five. It is the result of a conscious effort to focus several disciplines upon a single aspect of the social life of man - his family and kinship organization and their relation to the regulation of sex and marriage. In intent, and hopefully in achievement, the work is not a contribution to anthropology alone, nor to sociology or psychology, but to an integrated science of human behavior.

The research technique upon which the volume depends, and without which it would not have been undertaken, is that of the Cross-Cultural Survey. Initiated in 1937 as part of the integrated program of research in the social sciences conducted by the Institute of Human Relations at Yale University, the Cross-Cultural Survey has built up a complete file of geographical, social, and cultural information, extracted in full from the sources and classified by subject, on some 150 human societies, historical and contemporary as well as primitive. From these files it is possible to secure practically all the existing information on particular topics in any of the societies covered in an insignificant fraction of the time required for comparable library research.

About the Author
Diaz Nesamoney is an accomplished technology entrepreneur who founded three successful technology companies. Currently Diaz is Founder, President, and CEO of Jivox, a company that provides a technology platform for personalized advertising. He was previously Cofounder, President, and Chief Operating Officer at Informatica (NASDAQ:INFA), which he took from a startup to a publicly traded company in 1999. Before founding Jivox, he founded Celequest, raised more than $20 million in venture capital, and served as its CEO until early 2007, when the company was acquired by Cognos/IBM. Diaz is a board member of the American India Foundation, a leading international development organization charged with the mission of accelerating social and economic change in India.
