This is a great book for developers seeking to understand how to translate C++ datatypes in the Win32 API functions into C# and VB.NET. It's not in-depth like Dan Appleman's VB's Guide to the Win32 API in past years, but it's the first of its' kind for .NET. My only wish is that the author not have spent so much time on DirectX and instead provided more general examples of other API calls. DirectX coverage should have been left for another book aimed specifically at that technology.

If you are doing .NET -> Native interop., this book should pretty have almost all that you need. Note that it does not cover COM (RCW) interop in that much detail and does not talk about CCW (COM -> .NET). However, the coverage of MarshalAs() and the clever examples that show how to deal with the complex DirectX structures are alone worth the price of admission.What I liked best was the author didn't take the cop out solution (managed C++) unless it was absolutely necessary. Most of the code examples in the book are in C# and this might be of some concern to the VB.NET programmers. The chapters are well organized and there's an appendix with 50+ good tips on PInvoke. If you are still struggling with your PInvoke interop problem after reading this book, it's time to bring out the heavy weight (Adam Nathan's bible) -- good luck!!!Atul

I am an intermediate programmer, who in the past, has done some Visual Basic 6 and Win32 API integration programming. After learning VB.NET and C#, I found that the .NET Framework was missing some functionality of the Win32 API, which surprised me a little since Microsoft is really pushing .NET as the "API" of choice for developers.I agree with the book that the .NET Framework is mostly targeted at business developers and the Internet for B2B and B2C applications, as well as internal Enterprise applications. Having said that, I have found the .NET framework lacking, and as the author points out, most likely due to how young it is in comparison to the Win32 API.This book will get you up and running with making those Win32 API calls when you can't find that same functionality duplicated in the .NET Framework. There isn't much documentation on this subject matter on MSDN or the web (searching on Google), so this is pretty much it. The author did a great job, however, at times, the examples were a little light or topics weren't explained as thoroughly as they should have been. For example, the author will tell you what data type he used in place of a native Win32 data type, but doesn't clearly explain his reasoning for the choice. But other than that small complaint, this book is a must have for any .NET developer.

No matter if was wrote on 2002 and you are writing your code in 2015 this is sti what you need!This book also discusses how to use managed C++ to wrap API calls, when you need to do something which can't be done directly with Platform Invoke.Definitely a great book for C# & VB.NET programmers who needs the Win32 API, or other DLLs.As you know managed languages leaks when dealing with resources (file I/O, security, graphics and so on) so if you are a manged developer and you want that your application to sale up when dealing with that stuff you should go native.And this book if the key how to do it.A must buy.

I am in the process of writing code to communicate with a microcontroler chip via USB. This requires calling the Win32 DeviceIoControl function to pass the requests to the device driver. Each USB funtion requires different data structures to be passed and returned using DeviceIoControl. These data structures use many of the wierd data types that Microsoft has defined in the Win32 API, which makes it dificult to write code in C# using Platform Invoke.This book dosn't cover DeviceIoControl, or USB, but it has all the techniques I need to solve this problem, and has saved many hours of my time. I was starting to think that I would have to write my USB code in C++ with a managed C++ wrapper, but I am now making progress writing it completly in C#.This book also discusses how to use managed C++ to wrap API calls, when you need to do something which can't be done directly with Platform Invoke.There are 4 chapters on using DirectX from .NET, which I havn't read yet.A great book for C# & VB.NET programmers who need to use the Win32 API, or other DLLs. You need to know C#, VB.NET, or another .NET language before reading this book. It also helps if you have had some experience with the Win32 API using C++ or VB6.

About the Author

After graduation from the University of Copenhagen in physics and chemistry, and a period as a high school teacher, Helge Kragh became Associate Professor at Cornell University, Departments of History and Physics. Later, he took positions as Curator at the Steno Museum for Science and Medicine and Professor of the History of Science at the University of Oslo. Since 1997, he has been Professor of the History of Science and Technology at Aarhus University, Denmark. He is a member of the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters, the International Academy for History of Science, and the European Academy of Science. From 2008-2010, he was President of the European Society for History of Science.

Starr captures the triumphs and tumult of the great agricultural strikes in the Imperial Valley, the San Joaquin Valley, Stockton, and Salinas, identifying the crucial role played by Communist organizers; he also shows how, after some successes, the Communists disbanded their unions on direct orders of the Comintern in 1935. The highpoint of social conflict, however, was 1934, the year of the coastwide maritime strike, and here Starr's narrative talents are at their best, as he brings to life the astonishing general strike that took control of San Francisco, where workers led by charismatic longshoreman Harry Bridges mounted the barricades to stand off National Guardsmen. That same year socialist Upton Sinclair won the Democratic nomination for governor, and he launched his dramatic End Poverty in California (EPIC) campaign. In the end, however, these challenges galvanized the Right in a corporate, legal, and vigilante counterattack that crushed both organized labor and Sinclair. And yet, the Depression also brought out the finest in Californians: state Democrats fought for a local New Deal; California natives helped care for more than a million impoverished migrants through public and private programs; artists movingly documented the impact of the Depression; and an unprecedented program of public works (capped by the Golden Gate Bridge) made the California we know today possible.
In capturing the powerful forces that swept the state during the 1930s--radicalism, repression, construction, and artistic expression--Starr weaves an insightful analysis into his narrative fabric. California during the Depression was a battleground where socialists, labor activists and free-speech advocates faced often violent resistance from a militant right using vigilante squads, tear gas- wielding police, suppression of civil liberties, and antiunion crackdowns. In a vibrant, engrossing chronicle (the fifth volume in his Americans and the Californian Dream series), Starr, California's State Librarian, reclaims the Depression-era Golden State as an important chapter in the American experiment. He charts the struggles of Wobblies, of striking waterfront workers and of thousands of migrant dust-bowl, Mexican and Filipino farmworkers who challenged the agribusiness oligarchy. Socialist novelist Upton Sinclair's 1934 gubernatorial bid on the Democratic ticket, buttressing his End Poverty in California (EPIC) campaign, was defeated by a combination of big money and Hollywood fund-raising. Although California, then a right-of-center Republican state, resisted Roosevelt's New Deal, its migrant camps aided the displaced poor, and an unprecedented public works program revitalized the economy, creating schools, dams, parks, urban improvement projects and the Golden Gate Bridge. This fourth volume in California State Librarian Starr's "Americans and the California Dream" series (e.g., Material Dreams: Southern California Through the 1920s, Oxford Univ. Pr., 1990) takes on the Depression, which had a profound impact on California's economy, politics, society, and culture. Starr focuses on personalities such as Upton Sinclair and Harry Bridges and social developments such as migrant farm labor and "Ham and Eggs," which contributed to an already distinct California style and tradition. As he has done before, Starr includes a section on public works, which describes water development projects and the jewel in California's architectural crown, the Golden Gate Bridge. He includes a detailed bibliographic essay. The mix of sound scholarship and contemporary literary expression creates a fascinatingly readable picture of the Golden State in the 1930s. Highly recommended for all libraries with California collections.

If you're taking MITx 6.00.1x on edX, you NEED this book. This book has a lot of clarifications and examples that will make your progress on the course so much easier. Also, there are free editions of this book available elsewhere, but they don't cover Python 3, and this book does. Well worth the money!

I chose this book for teaching a small intro CS class in Python (3), after reviewing a lot of other books. So many are focused on all the details of the language, but I wanted a book that taught more of the big ideas of computer science/programming. Like: exhaustive enumeration is an amazingly powerful tool in 2016 where our processors go way faster than our programmers go. And bisection search. There's other good, practical outlook in the book. Go read the table of contents. I wish the introduction of OOP were a little easier for beginners. I enjoy Guttag's footnotes and musings.

This is a great book that covers a lot of ground on the field of computer science. Don't expect it to be a step by step guide of how to program in the Python language, or how to use its multiple libraries. Instead this books uses Python to teach you about computation and how to think and solve problems like a computer scientist.Sintaxis, semantics, algorithms and computational complexity are some of the topics you can expect to see in this book, and even though, at some point I had to spent quite a bit of time rereading to grasp some of the concepts, if you have the patience and time, is well worth it!Finger exercises (coding exercises) really give you a chance to put the knowledge you acquire to good use

A very good intro book that not only teaches you the codes/syntax but also methodologies of computing. I bought it for MIT's intro to Python course on EdX, as this is the recommended textbook. The course and the book are both great!

This book is simply amazing. Its purpose is more computer and data science than learning the python language. It is an extensive introduction which dives into stochastic models and inferential statistics. It is really rare to find these topics covered in a book meant for beginners. And you won't believe it but it is fun to read!

This book is a supplement for 6.001x and 6.002x which are introductory computer science courses offered by MIT on edX.org. It is very well written and an absolute must-read if taking the courses.

This is a great book about computer science, but it's a pity that this book (now second edition with a lot of courses and students used it) doesn't follow Python coding convention. If you want to study Python, get an another book, if you are an experienced Python and want to sharpen your computer science knowledge, get this book.

Superb content, as one might expect from MIT. An excellent companion to the MITx: 6.00.n.x series (thus far two) MOOCs. I'll hold onto this one versus selling as used, as is my typical MO after finishing with coursework.

Stephen Gilligan, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist practicing in Encinitas, CA. After receiving his doctorate in Psychology from Stanford University, he became one of the foremost teachers and practitioners of Ericksonian hypnotherapy. He developed Self-relations Psychotherapy, an approach that integrates mind, body and spiritual experience. Robert Dilts has been a developer, author, trainer and consultant in the field of NLP since its creation in 1975 by John Grinder and Richard Bandler. In addition to spearheading the applications of NLP to education, creativity, health, and leadership, his personal contributions to the field of NLP include much of the seminal work on NLP strategies and belief systems, and the development of 'systemic NLP'.
