This is essential reading for any professional soldier or diplomat conducting business in east Africa. Kaplan neatly lays out the narrative as is his style. His commentary is on target. I have worked this theater for 5 years now and he does not write one thing which I can say is inaccurate. His insights provide explanation to what may seem to the uninitiated as chaos. Thanks.

I apologize for the obnoxious and arguably flippant alliteration in that title, but it manages to be remarkably accurate. I found this book to be an extremely well-written and enlightening, if at times somewhat chaotic, account of the complicated situation on the horn of Africa around the time of the mid-1980s. Its focus is on the underreported factors that contributed to the famine that ravaged the region, namely that regional wars and corrupt leaders were far more responsible for the mass starvation and suffering than simply the drought itself. A compelling if depressing read that sheds light on protracted, devastating events that are largely unknown to most of the world.

Kaplan has great books because he is on the ground, describing what he sees. This one would have been better if I would have read it years ago. Still, it is a good history of the region. You can tell it was one of the first books that he wrote. Sometimes you lose track of the people he is writing about. But overall, it is a good read, especially if you like his other books.

I always enjoy reading Robert Kaplan, so the book is a great tour of Africa. Even though the material is now somewhat dated, I am sure that the political and social contexts have not changed all that much in the intervening years. I recommend this like all Mr. Kaplan's other works highly.

Insightful and easy to read analysis of the 70s and 80s Horn of Africa. And the political side of the 1980s famine. As always a great book from the Author.

I've been reading Kaplan for years. He has a unique way of exploring an issue or region of the world and bringing it home for the reader in a way that balances history, politics, and culture with a touch of the exotic. Kaplan also has a keep grasp of the world and where it is going. Reading Kaplan is always interesting, provocative, and thought-provoking. I would recommend any book he's written as a good read.I must confess my ignorance about Ethiopia. I grew up with the commercials for starving children and famine relief and Live Aid, but I never actually knew much about it. I just figured it was another group of hungry people who were doomed by bad weather and bad geography. I never paid much attention to the issues of that part of the world, so I was shocked to learn just how much I had missed in my own lifetime in Ethiopia. Kaplan does a terrific job of explaining the background and bringing the issues to vivid life. This book is somewhat dated, but it still serves as a great description of what was happening in the region in the 1980s and 1990s and it helps shed light on the issues facing the region today.

This is not a pedantic translation or a bowdlerized retelling; Cohen does not substitute weak cliches for Chaucer's rollicking and earthy metaphors, nor does she sacrifice the rhythms of his text. Readers hear the bickering of the pilgrims as they decide on which tale they want to hear next, and the rambling voice of the good Sir John as he laments Chaunticleer's fate. Hyman's meticulous drawings not only evoke the rich panoply of 14th century England, but they are faithful to the text in the smallest detail. Each pilgrim is made particular: we see the Pardoner's limp hanks of hair and the Wife of Bath's gap-toothed smile and dainty ankle. She doesn't bowdlerize as Farjeon (Hale, 1930) and McCaughrean (Childrens, 1984; o.p.), who included more stories, had to. Cohen's choices: ``The Nun's Priest's Tale'' (Chauntecleer), ``The Pardoner's Tale'' (revelers in search of death), ``The Wife of Bath's Tale'' (variant of Sir Gawain and the Loathly Lady), and ``The Franklin's Tale'' (honor, fidelity, and generosity). She has given equal importance and depth to the tellers and to the tales. Her language, as always, is clear and fine. Hyman's glowing watercolors, bordered in gold, illuminate the tales. She has not painted the characters in flat, medieval style, but has given them the depth that the tales do, bringing them to life, dressed precisely as Chaucer described them, captured in a medieval frame, as Chaucer had framed them in the pilgrimage. I was two thirds into this, one of his best, works when I recognized a phrase Vincent said. Then I remembered I had read this one before, but I continued to read it because I couldn't recall the ending. There is a specific sequence of events that is referenced in multiple subsequent novels. Not so much a "whodunnit" as a "whatchagonnaDOaboutit," this novel is gripping, tense and shocking. John Lescroart does not disappoint.I consider The First Law required reading for those looking to get into Lescroart's subsequent Hardy/Glitsky novels. What happens here has serious repercussions in the next couple of books and, most profoundly, in The Ophelia Cut (released a few weeks before this review was written).

I have read most of the Ditmas Hardy stories and have enjoyed them This one especially was well written and a good story. I read this awhile ago and downloaded it for my kindle when it was on special.This story has everything and was a good read many years later

I always enjoy reading Lescroart since I once lived in SF and recognize many of the places he mentions. I've even been in the Shamrock out on Lincoln near GG Park. Plus the stories are well written with real characters.

When Sam Silverman is murdered in his jewelry store, a twisting, downhill ride begins for Dismas Hardy and Abe Glitsky and their close circle of friends who become enmeshed in a vortex of violence that touches them all, and leads them into more danger than they had anticipated. Lescroart has a way with murder plots and his strong character development is one of his strengths as an author. This is worth reading and may keep the reader up later than he or she would like, but it's worth it.

Very boring read with to much bad language! John is a much better writer than this. Why all the "F" words?

Different but not in a good way. Not lescroart s best. Of course, there's incompetence and a touch of corruption in most police departments,but this Book stretched the limits. Nothing offered for gersons motive.

About the Author

Howard Rachlin was trained as an engineer at Cooper Union and as a psychologist at The New School University and Harvard University. He has taught at Harvard University and at Stony Brook University.
