About the Author

Mary Lee, Pharm. D., BCPS, FCCP, is Vice President, Chief Academic Officer for Pharmacy and Health Sciences Education, Midwestern University, and Professor of Pharmacy Practice, Chicago College of Pharmacy.  Dr. Lee graduated with BS in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1976 and 1979, respectively, and completed a residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1977.  She joined the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Pharmacy in 1979, where she served as director of the drug information center and then clinical pharmacist to the urological surgery service at the hospital.  In 1985, she was promoted to associate professor and from 1985-1990, she served as assistant dean of student affairs.  In 1994, she became associate dean of Midwestern University Chicago College of Pharmacy; and in 1998, she became dean.   She served as dean of the College from 1998 through 2006.   

 Dr. Lee has published over 100 research manuscripts, book chapters, review articles, and short reports in peer-reviewed publications.  She has served as an elected officer on the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Board of Regents, chair of the Clinical Section, American Pharmaceutical Association, Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science, and as chair or member of numerous committees of APhA, ACCP, and state pharmacy associations.  She is considered an expert on pharmacological issues in urological diseases, has earned board certification in pharmacotherapy, has won numerous teaching awards, and is an invited speaker for many national and international meetings.

William E. Cain is Mary Jewett Gaiser Professor of English at Wellesley College. Among his many publications is a monograph on American literary and cultural criticism, 1900-1945, in The Cambridge History of American Literature, Vol. 5 (2003). Alice McDermott is the author of the forthcoming novel Someone and six previous novels, including After This; Child of My Heart; Charming Billy, winner of the 1998 National Book Award; and At Weddings and Wakes, all published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. That Night, At Weddings and Wakes, and After This were all finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. McDermott lives with her family outside Washington, D.C.

 

Lance E. Newman is Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, where he teaches Early American Literature, Environmental Literature, and Creative Writing. He has also worked as a river guide for more than two decades, leading rafting trips in Southeastern Utah and in Grand Canyon. He is the author of The Grand Canyon Reader (University of California Press, 2011) and Our Common Dwelling: Henry Thoreau, Transcendentalism, and the Class Politics of Nature (Palgrave, 2005). With Joel Pace and Chris Keonig-Woodyard, he co-edited Transatlantic Romanticism: An Anthology of British, American, and Canadian Literature, 1767-1867 (Longman, 2006). He co-produced the documentary film Canyonlands: Edward Abbey and the Great American Desert (2011) with Roderick Coover. Newman’s poems have appeared in many print and web magazines, and he is the author of two poetry chapbooks, Come Kanab (Dusi-e/chaps Kollectiv, 2007) and 3by3by3 (Beard of Bees, 2010), both available free on the Web.

 

Hilary E. Wyss is Hargis Professor of American Literature at Auburn University, where she teaches courses in early American literature, American studies, and Native American studies. She is the author of over a dozen articles and book chapters as well as three books, including English Letters and Indian Literacies: Reading, Writing, and New England Missionary Schools, 1750-1830 (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2012);  Early Native Literacies in New England: a Documentary and Critical Anthology (University of Massachusetts Press, 2008, co-edited with Kristina Bross); and Writing Indians: Literacy, Christianity, and Native Community in Early America (University of Massachusetts Press, 2000). She has won teaching awards at Auburn University as well as national research grants to support her work.  She has served on the editorial board of the journal Early American Literature and was most recently the President of the Society of Early Americanists.

Good if you are a professional in childhood development. Bought it for my husband to help him understand what happened to his development due to numerous childhood traumas but it was over his head.

This is definitely not a light or easy read.It is very informative and worth it if you can go through the book more than once.The book does address the 'stages' of life superficially, but since the focus really is on childhood that is to be expected.This was a good buy.

Childhood and Society, in its first edition, was Erik H. Erikson's first book. The second edition, which I read pieces of for a project, incorporates more of the ideas he had after some significant historical events took place. Erikson heavily considers context and culture in the development of the ego or identity, which is the main focus of this book. It also has his own description of the Eight Stages of Man for which he is famous. Erikson's writing is at times vague and hard to follow, but this book is a must read for anyone wanting to understand more completely Erikson's earlier theories.

This was useful for me when studying Erickson Theory for bachelors degree. It was worth buying on kindle for that purpose.

A classic book. Chapter 8 on psychosocial development is worth the price of the book.

Mr. Erikson wrote a thought-provoking book, but it is certainly a product of his times. Such notions as homosexuality being deviant (his word, not mine) behavior and was more of a symptom of a psychologically damaged individual has not held up to present scientific evidence. Overall, the book is a fascinating dissection of childhood development and how it possibly manifests itself in adulthood. But reading this material wasn't exactly a cake walk. I doubt many casual readers could wade through Mr. Erikson's book without developing MEGO (My Eyes Glaze Over) Syndrome. For what it's worth, I enjoyed most of it.
